Zowey (Togolese Spicy Peanut Balls)

This month, Eat the World is headed to Togo, a small West African Country.

When I started researching recipes, I was immediately drawn to Zowey, which are spicy peanut balls, and seemed reminiscent of the energy balls I make for Dude during sports season.

These do differ greatly from the energy balls, however.  The peanut butter is bound with corn flour and then they’re seasoned with honey, ginger, and cayenne pepper for a sweet and spicy kick.

Confession time - I didn’t love these.  The corn flour was off putting for me - it had a strong flavor (which is weird, because the rest of the flavors are strong too and worked so well together) and the corn flour left a very dry feeling in my mouth.  It is also entirely possible I made a mistake somewhere along the way with this recipe.

Even though it wasn’t a favorite, I’m glad I was able to give it a try!

Zowey (Togolese Spicy Peanut Balls)

Adapted from Fafa Gilbert & Savourous

150 grams corn flour (masa)

150 grams peanut butter

1 tablespoon ginger paste (or 1 teaspoon ginger powder)

1-2 tablespoon honey, to taste

¾ teaspoon cayenne pepper powder

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Pinch salt

Place the corn flour in a dry skillet over medium heat.  Cook, stirring frequently until the corn flour is lightly browned.

Place the toasted corn flour and remaining ingredients in a bowl and stir to mix.  Divide into balls and serve.
