Fernet Hot Toddy

Sunday Funday is all about the warm drinks today - perfect since we just weathered our 2nd major storm of the season, which included 2 ½ snow days!

Typically, I would have made something with coffee or hot cocoa, but ever since I learned about Fernet Branca and its supposed medicinal properties (at least during prohibition, that is), I’ve been itching to make a Hot Toddy with Fernet Branca.

But, I first learned about Fernet Branca in the summer, and I wanted to wait until cold weather season before making this drink.

Hot Toddies are often enjoyed as a cold/flu remedy.  Tea and honey to soothe achy throats plus a shot of whiskey to warm the chills away while you rest.  This time, I made my Hot Toddy during the first blizzard of the season.  It was a cozy way to spend an afternoon!

Fernet Hot Toddy

Adapted from the Blind Pig

1 cup hot tea (I used mint, chamomile would also be nice)

1 ½ ounces whiskey

½ ounce fernet branca

½ teaspoon honey

½ teaspoon lemon juice (or a squeeze of lemon)

2 dashes orange bitters

Rosemary, to garnish

Mix all liquid ingredients together.  Pour into 2 small teacups (the size pictured) or one coffee cup.  Garnish with rosemary.
