Holy Ghost Cookies

"Ain’t No Ghost, but the Holy Ghost" is my new favorite Halloween theme.  I even have a matching shirt and in true librarian form, the ghost on my shirt is reading the bible.  Love it.

This is actually the second version of these Holy Ghost Cookies.

The first time, I made these using dark chocolate mocha cookies, then used only white frosting and negative space from the dark cookies as the face.  They were fun and I loved them.

Then this year, I was making cookies for a fall themed bridal shower and cut a few ghosts out just for fun.  Since I had some thicker frosting and some nice fall colors, I decided to go with a little Dia de Los Muertos theme and ice these ones with flower crowns!  And I still added the text with an edible food marker.

I liked the first version of the cookies, but  loved these ones.  A little more polished, still a nod to my Catholic roots (Dia de Los Muertos also had Catholic roots), these were perfect.

Shortly after making the cookies, Movie and Munchies chose Practical Magic for the movie of the month.  I’ve somehow never seen that one.  And since I found out it was also a book, I decided to read the book first and then watch the movie.

You guys.  Both get 3.5 of 5 stars for me and I was kinda sad, because both book and movie could have been more.

Oddly enough, the movie was strong in areas where the book was weak, and vice versa.  I was disappointed in each for different reasons.

Practical Magic (Practical Magic, #1)Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Is it weird that I waited to rate this book until after I watched the movie?

I was slight unsatisfied by the book and was wondering if the movie would be more satisfying. Then the movie was unsatisfying in different ways. Ugh.

The book had much more nuance in the sister relationship and the mess that was Jimmy, though Gillian had more redemption in the book after she met Ben.

The movie had a stronger connection to magic (Sally & Gillian and therefore their daughters seemed to be more obvious in the movie as opposed to being taught in the book) and the aunts were much more involved, which I liked.

But the book defeated Jimmy more strongly (ugh, girl power from the women who hated the Owens in the movie? what?) But Sally's ending relationship in the movie was stranger than the book! AHHHHH!!!!

Let's say both get a 3.5

Regardless, it was an enjoyable book/movie comparison.  There wasn’t a ton of food mentioned in the movie (vegetarian lasagna showed up a lot in the book), but they did have to defeat ghost Jimmy in both, so I think ghost cookies fulfill the requirement!
