Copycat Baked Arby's Curly Fries

Last year, I made Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwiches and Arby’s sauce but I bought the curly fries frozen and baked them.

But then I got to wondering…could curly fries be made at home?

Honestly, the most difficult part of this process is getting the fries cut, because it is challenging to find a curly fry cutter.  Hubs worked some magic with my apple corer/peeler/cutter to make a pretty close resemblance to curly fries.

The next hardest part is the cooking time because…you guys!...I have tried these so many times and either have slightly mushy fries or almost burnt.  Part of the problem is timing.  Sometimes I have them just right, but whatever I had as a main dish coming off the grill was not quite ready so I turned off the oven and let them sit…WRONG MOVE!  They will totally burn in this situation.   Another time, we had a guest, so I added a 4th potato and (you guessed it) the pan was over crowded, so the fries just wouldn’t crisp up.

So, the main lessons here are: 1. Don’t over crowd the pan, 2. Watch the fries carefully, 3.  Do not turn off the oven to keep them warm and expect good results.

Is this a perfect recipe?  Sadly, no.  So please leave your tips, and I hope to have something perfected to share in the future!

Potatoes

Copycat Baked Arby’s Curly Fries

Adapted from Like Mother Like Daughter

2-3 large potatoes

2 tablespoon olive oil

2 teaspoons smoked paprika

2 teaspoonspoon paprika

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon onion powder

⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.  Line with foil or silicone mats, if desired.  Bring a large pot of water to a boil.

Cut the potatoes into spirals (I used my apple corer/peeler/slicer).

Place the potato spirals into the boiling water and cook for 3 minutes.  Drain and run under cold water to stop the cooking.

Toss the parboiled potatoes in the olive oil and spices and stir until coated.

Spread the fries in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.  Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally or until the fries are crispy.

  1. Interesting way of preparing them. I'll have to try this, but I'll make regular fries. Did you pat the potatoes dry before tossing them in the oil?

  2. Hey, you gave it a good go! I think they look tasty. As the great chef Jacques Pepin has been quoted as saying, “There’s no failure. You eat your mistakes and move on."

  3. I think that you would have to deep fry them to get them to taste like Arby's but this is a great, healthier alternative.

  5. I loved Arby's curly fries! Ours closed a couple years ago so I haven't had them in a while. Yours look realllly good! And to be honest, I liked finding the soft ones as well as the crunchy ones. I would pick out and eat all the softies first!

  6. Haven't had curly fries in ages. Don't know how the Arby's one taste but got to enjoy them in India as a starter.
