Banoffee Sundae

This month’s Cook the Books Club book is Maame by Jessica George.  Here’s my GoodReads review.

MaameMaame by Jessica George
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Oof, this was was simply just not for me. I can see how many would enjoy a book like this, however, I found the book to be incredibly depressing, the main character (Maddie) to be incredibly annoying and immature, and her metamorphosis to be pretty unrealistic.

What it did do well (I think) was to explore how other cultures may have expectations and family dynamics that are different than my own.

Sadly, I can’t say I was a fan.  It was a depressing read and the main character’s over-reliance on Googling everything was both bizarre and annoying.

There were some food references here.  When she is dating some rando at the beginning, he loves to cook for her.  One of the things he serves is a Banoffee Sundae.

From watching British cooking shows, I’ve heard of banoffee pie, but never actually knew what went into it.  So I decided to do some research and then a lot of small things all came together to make a pretty spectacular little sundae!

Banoffee Pie is made from a crust (shortbread, graham cracker, or digestive biscuits), dulce de leche, bananas, and whipped cream.  Pretty simple actually.  For a sundae version, I figured the vanilla ice cream would take the place of the whipped cream.

So I bought a banana, I had half a pint of ice cream leftover from when I made Tarte Tatin, remembered that Hubs had brought home a tiny little pot of dulce de leche a friend had brought him from a trip to Mexico, and found a package of Biscoff cookies (not quite digestives, but close enough) someone had grabbed and not eaten on a recent airplane trip!  Yep, I had all the makings for the sundae!

I layered it all up on a fun glass and Hubs and I enjoyed this sweet treat thoroughly!  I’m thinking someday I will need to make a full banofee pie!

Banoffee Sundae

2 biscoff cookies, crumbled

¾ cup vanilla ice cream

1-2 tablespoon dulce de leche

1 banana, sliced

Layer ingredients in a dish.  Enjoy.

  1. LOL, this was what I was going to make too, but then I changed my mind when she and Mia went to the cafe and ordered a beet smoothie.

  2. I liked the book more than you did! I would have thought that banoffee was an American flavour but clearly not! Your sundae does sound delicious!

  3. I totally agree with you. I couldn't finish the book, it was just too depressing and the main character so lacking in gumption!

  4. Sorry 'bout that. Glad you found some inspiration anyway for this dessert. I agree that the Googling thing was just written weird. It was like she was using AI more than Google.
