Greek Frappe (or Whipped Coffee or Dalgona Coffee or TikTok Coffee)

Disclaimer: This post contains a recipe highlighting a different country or culture. While I strive for authenticity, I sometimes need to make adjustments to recipes due to ingredient availability.

Today’s recipe is one of those recipes that’s been around for ages but then went viral on TikTok so everyone thinks it’s new.  Spoiler alert, everyone is me too.  While I didn’t see it on TikTok, I did see it once it got into other social media platforms and in a movie!

For this month’s Movies & Munchies we were invited to watch any of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies since the third recently came out.  It’s been a long time since I’d seen the first and I hadn’t seen the other two, so Hubs and I decided to watch all three.

Today’s Greek Frappe came from the third movie.  The movie was ok but it didn’t have the charm of the first two movies.

However, I was interested in the Greek Frappe which has been around for awhile but as mentioned before became popular on TikTok.  It is also known as Whipped Coffee or by the Korean version, Dalgona Coffee.

So what’s it all about?  It is a 3-ingredient iced coffee made from instant coffee, sugar, and water or milk.  That’s it.

Because of the way instant coffee is created, when beaten it allows the coffee to foam up, almost to the consistency of whipped cream.

Herein lies the challenge (for me at least), getting the coffee to whip.

  • I started with my battery powered coffee whisk.  I got a little foam, but the whisk quickly got bogged down and wouldn’t whip the rest.

  • I tried my mini blender, but there wasn’t enough liquid to get it going.

  • I tried my electric milk frother and had great luck, but I don’t think that’s its intended use, so I was reluctant to try it again

  • I tried a mason jar and shook like crazy and got some foam, but like the battery whisk, wasn’t able to completely foam the liquid

  • Finally I gave it one more shot - I used the mason jar with 2 ice cubes and was finally met with success! Yes!

  • I’ve also read that a cocktail shaker will work as well, but I don’t have one so I didn’t try that.

Whew - it was a lot of work for an instant coffee!  However, now that I have the method down, I can see this being a go-to summer treat!

Greek Frappe (or Whipped Coffee or Dalgona Coffee or TikTok Coffee)

Recipe from Lemon & Olives

Coffee Foam

2 teaspoons Nescafe instant coffee

1 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon cold water

2 ice cubes

Frappe

¼-½ cup water, to taste

2-4 tablespoons milk or cream of choice, to taste

ice

Mix together the instant coffee, sugar, and tablespoon of water.  Place in a lidded jar.  Add 2 ice cubes and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes or until the coffee is foamy.

Add ice to a glass.  Pour foam over the ice.  Add the additional water to the jar to rinse out residual foam and add to the cup with the foam.  Top with milk of choice and enjoy.
