Cinnamon Roll Cookies #foodnflix

It’s time for this month’s Food ‘n Flix movie!  This month, Heather from All Roads Lead to the Kitchen is hosting with the mid-90’s teen flick, Clueless.

I vaguely remember watching Clueless as a high schooler, but I didn’t remember much of it, so I cued it up and watched it with my foodie goggles on.

Before we get to the recipe and the inspiration, can we talk about the train wreckiness? First, the stereotypical 90’s high school airheads – so so annoying!  Next, Cher is saving herself until she really loves someone, then throws herself at the first hot guy she sees?  Um what?!?  And lastly, I’m pretty sure Josh is her brother or step-brother or something.  Barf.  How is that even a love story?  I dunno – it’s super weird.

Anyhow, this recipe is inspired by two parts from the movie.  First, when Cher decides that her new “project” will be to “remake” new girl and tom-boy, Tai.  She gets Tai on a workout regimen that includes good ‘ol Buns of Steel.

The second half of the inspiration comes from the part I mentioned before when Cher decides to throw herself at the new guy.  One of her steps for seduction includes having something baking in the oven when a date comes over.  She then proceeds to toss an entire cookie log into the oven (which she forgets about and burns).

Between those two inspirations, and the season, I knew I wanted to make cinnamon roll cookies!    Cinnamon rolls reminded me of “buns of steel” and these are freeze and slice cookies, so they start out being rolled into a cookie log!

I am so glad I had the opportunity to make these!  They are so delicious and taste exactly like cinnamon tolls!  It’s uncanny!

I also love that these aren’t overly Christmasy, so they can be enjoyed year-round!

Cinnamon Roll Cookies
Adapted slightly from Sally’s Baking Addiction

Dough
¾ cup butter, softened
¾ cup white sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
2 ¼ cups all purpose flour

Filling
2 tablespoons butter, melted
¼ cup white sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Icing
½ cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer.  Beat until light and creamy.

Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined.

Add the baking powder, salt, and flour and mix until combined.

Split the dough in half.  Roll each half into a ¼-inch thick rectangle (approximately 9x7 inches).  Spread half the melted butter over each rectangle.  Mix the sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle half the mixture over the butter in each rectangle.

Starting on a long end, slowly roll each rectangle into a tight log.  Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Line baking sheet with parchment or a silicone baking mat.

Remove dough logs from the freezer.  Use a sharp knife to cut ¼-inch slices.  Place on baking sheets.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges begin to brown.  Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then move to wire racks and cool completely.

To make the icing, combine the powdered sugar, vanilla, and half the milk.  Stir, slowly adding remaining milk until the icing reaches the desired consistency.  Frost the cookies with an offset spatula.  Allow the icing to dry before storing in an airtight container.

  2. I love that phrase "train wreckiness" LOL...I'm stealing it and I'm gonna steal one of these cookies the next time you're here and you make them for us

  3. I loved the wackiness of the film and it's just another reminder that teenagers' brains are not fully developed. Pinning this cookie for the next holiday season (which I might make for Valentine's Day so I don't have to wait until Christmas!).

  4. I love that you pulled the cookies and a bit of the character together to get your inspiration. These look great, and I'm betting your house smelled amazing while they were cooking, unlike the scene in the film. -Kimberly (coffee and casseroles)

  5. Great "Buns of Steel" catch and the cookie log scene is one of my favorites. Your cookies look amazing too. I would need to keep the video on repeat to work them off my buns. ;-)
