Ham & Pickle Rollups {Food 'n Flix}

Evelyne from Cheap Ethinc Eatz hosted this month’s Food ‘n Flix movie (the club in which participants watch a movie as inspiration and then cook up something delicious) which was Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition).

Can you believe I’ve never seen this one in its entirety?  I’ve seen bits and pieces in the past, but this is the first time I’ve seen the whole thing!

If you’re not familiar, the movie follows the antics of Bridget Jones, a 30-something British lady who is looking for love.  She makes quite a few questionable choices, but eventually everything ends up right in her world.

During the movie, we find out that Bridget Jones is a horrible cook.  She menu includes blue leek soup (a misadventure with colored string), congealed gravy, and overly sweet pudding.  Not very inspiring.

What was inspiring was, oddly enough, one of the opening scenes.

Bridget Jones has just arrived at her parents’ house for Christmas dinner and introduces her mother:

“My mum, a strange creature from the time when pickles on toothpicks were still the height of sophistication.”

And a bit later in the scene, her mother is indeed walking around offering guests pickles on toothpicks from an appetizer tray.

Why is this so inspiring?  Because I am a pickle FREAK!  I love pickles so much, it is kind of ridiculous.  I’ve been known to eat pickles for lunch…for weeks straight…incidentally, that’s the recipe I’m sharing today.

Another interesting factoid…I’ve passed on my love of pickles to Spud.  In fact, when he turned 4 this past August, the only gifts he asked for were pickles and a pickle fork (both of which I totally got for him – it was epic, you’ve never seen such joy!)

For the recipe, I’ve updated Bridget’s Mum’s recipe a bit.  Classed it up, so to speak.  I made pickles the way I consider healthy enough for lunch (and paired it with wine, another of Bridget Jones’ favorites (actually it was grape juice, I’m not that much of a lush!))

I wrap the pickles in ham (you can add a layer cream cheese if you’d like, but I usually don’t) and stick them on a Ritz cracker (bacon flavored preferable, because omigosh they’re amazing!)

Ham & Pickle Rollups

Baby Dill Pickles
Deli Ham, sliced in half
Bacon Ritz

Roll each pickle in a piece of ham and place on a cracker (toothpicks optional).  There’s meat in there so you can call it lunch.  Or appetizers, because we’re a sophisticated bunch.

  5. And I thought the pickles would be lost for the soup. Love this.

  7. How fun! I was going to make some pickles on toothpicks to go with my curried eggs but didn't. I clearly need to make some and try them with those bacon Ritz--I think they could become addicting. ;-)
