Watermelon Margarita {SRC}

This is one blazin’ hot summer!  So when I got my Secret Recipe Club assignment this month, Staying Close to Home, I was immediately drawn to all of the summery recipes (though there are so many cute kid friendly crafts and recipes, too – Snake Sandwich, you will happen one of these days!)

I am so glad I made the choice to do another drink (sheesh, two months in a row! – must be hot out!)  Watermelon Margaritas absolutely hit the spot and were so amazing at the end of a hot, muggy day.  I was a bit cheater and used sprite instead of making simple syrup (shhh…don’t tell) but do make some margaritas, and while you’re at it, head on over to Staying Close to Home and say, “Hello!”

Recipe Notes:
*Unless you are a tequila connoisseur, use what you already have on hand.  If you need to buy some, there is no need to buy expensive top shelf tequila for this recipe.  I used the cheapest bottom shelf tequila I could find (and I love it!)

Watermelon-Mint Margaritas
Adapted from Staying Close to Home

12 oz watermelon, cut in large chunks
6-8 mint leaves (optional)
2/3 cup sprite or other lemon-lime soda
2/3 cup tequila

Place the watermelon and the mint into a blender.  Blend until smooth.  Strain the mixture into a bowl through a fine mesh sieve or paper towel lined colander.

Mix the watermelon-mint juice (approximately 1 1/3 cup), sprite and tequila.  Serve in ice filled glasses.

If desired, brush the edges of the glasses with watermelon juice and dip in colored sugar before adding the ice and margarita.

Makes 4 small or 2 large margaritas

  1. Watermelon marharitas sound great! I'm sure the carbonation from the sprite made these even better! I made a drink this time too - a blueberry banana smoothie! This is my first time participating in the SRC and it's great to see all the recipes everyone else has prepared (looks like I accidentally added my name instead of the recipe name in the link party - oops).

  8. They look great.

I agree with you - there's no point in buying the expensive stuff if you're going to mix it with juice.

  9. This sounds so refreshing, Amy. I've seen a few watermelon drinks before, but this one sounds particularly appetizing because I'm a big fan of tequila ;)

  13. I love watermelon drinks but what can I substitute for tequila, as I don't drink alcohol ( I went and checked on google what it is is :)), just to make sure I don't write something which I don't know. well, Now I know for sure what it is and I don't drink, I should use something to substitute it ..., I love the coloured sugar around it..., looks beautiful

  14. You can just omit the tequila and have some delicious, refreshing carbonated watermelon juice!

  15. As I'm looking at the thermometer's reading of 94 degrees, I'm thinking you make the absolute perfect choice of recipe. I'd have to use a top-of-the-line tequila though. Apparently, some people, myself included, are allergic to the lower end stuff and get wicked headaches from even a sip of it. For this drink, it's worth the extra expense!
