Bangers and Baked Beans

It’s time for this month’s Food ‘n Flix, hosted by my real life friend, Wendy from A Day in the Life on the Farm.  She chose the movie, Knives Out.

I absolutely loved the movie.  It was a quirky, weird (in a good way) mystery, reminiscent of the 80’s film, Clue.  Plus it was very well cast.  Being me, I don’t remember the names of any of the actors or characters, but suffice to say, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

There wasn’t an abundance of food in the movie, but there was definitely enough for inspiration.  In one scene, 2 characters are chatting in a pub (the movie takes place in the US, but the food and atmosphere of the diner said “pub” to me).  Along with beers, the characters are enjoying a plate of what looks like beans, sausage, and toast.  A little research showed that this definitely pub grub, usually enjoyed at breakfast time.  The recipe I found added eggs and tomatoes to the mix, which I enjoyed very much.

I knew that the kids would never eat this in a million years, so I make waffles and sausages the day before (hoarding away some sausages), then served them leftover waffles the next day (it was piano lesson day, so it’s always a leftovers day) while Hubs and I enjoyed our Bangers (British for sausages) and beans.  I never would have put these foods together on my own, but I loved it!  I am so glad I watched the movie so I could try this recipe!

The recipe is ridiculously easy and delicious.  Since it was so simple, I decided to make my own bread, but if you skip that step, this comes together in a flash! I would definitely make this again!

Bangers and Baked Beans

Adapted from Food.com

1 small can baked beans

6 pork sausages

1 tablespoon butter

1 beefsteak tomato, cut in thick slices

2 eggs

2 slices homemade wheat bread

Salt & pepper to taste

Heat the beans in a small pot over medium heat.  Cook the sausages in another skillet until cooked through and browned.

Once the sausages are done, wipe out the skillet and add a little butter.  Once melted, add the tomato slices and eggs.  Season with salt and pepper.  Cook the eggs and tomatoes to desired doneness, carefully flipping once during cooking time.

Finally, toast the bread slices and smear with butter.  To serve, cut the toast in triangles and place on the plate at an angle, adding a scoop of beans in the center.  Top with an egg, sausages, and tomato slices.

  3. I'm trying to think of quintessential English food for next month's film, The Holiday. This is making me think about a good British breakfast. Great choice for Knives Out. I loved this film.
